tsunami affected areas, 6-7 months post : While on the east coast of Sri Lanka, I saw some of the effects of the tsunami. The devastation was overwhelming and the recovery slow, and I felt mixed feelings about making these sorts of visits. As the media moves on to more current tragedies and scintillations, however, it is important to remember that this recovery effort will take years and sustained international attention. While these photos are all of the areas directly affected by the tsunami, it is difficult to talk about the north and east of Sri Lanka without mentioning the fact that while the tsunami affected areas are receiving much attention and aid, there are other areas (and sometimes overlapping areas) in as much need after suffering through decades of conflict.

New Orleans, 7 months post-Katrina : This is a collection of photos I took while in New Orleans seven months after the hurricane and floods. Most are of the 9th Ward or the downtown/French Quarter area. I suggest viewing this gallery in order, as a slideshow. As in Sri Lanka, I had a difficult time taking photos of the most affected areas. Tourism in the area is simply inconsiderate. I feel it is important, however, for people to see the difference between those places which have been encouraged and aided in their recovery and those places where the community's return and rebuilding has met with structural apathy at best, outright structural resistance most often. I probably don't need to spell out the race and class of the different groups.

Oaxaca 2007 : These photos are from a 3 week stay in Oaxaca City in late July and early August of 2007. During this time, Ingrid and I studied at a local language school. We spent most of our time at the school, and what time we could wandering and exploring the area. It was also the one year anniversary of the cancellation of the state-sponsored Guelaguetza festival due to the (ongoing) social conflicts starting in May of 2006, and the continuation of that struggle was apparent in many parts of the city.

volunteer project, Sri Lanka : I was in Batticaloa to start a project with the purpose of bringing creative art activities to kids living in Children's Homes. Two others did the same for physical activities/games. We visited several homes and worked with three. I trained 4 tutors, picked by the administrators in the homes, and shared both a philosophy of creative/choice based art (as opposed to rote or artistic skill-enhancing) as well as activities which reflect that philosophy. Each tutor got a basket of materials and will receive (from the donor fund that started the project) a stipend as well as funds for replacing materials as they are used up. The training happened at one of the children's homes. We then visited the homes again to observe and support the tutors as they ran the activities. Independently of this, I also shared this information with 8 girls at a home who will be using these activities as they visit children in tsunami communities. These photos are a mishmash of all of those experiences, the visiting, the training, the activities, and the interactions with the young people.
